Roche may become top drugmaker by 2014

Roche Holding AG may become the world's largest pharmaceutical company by 2014 overtaking Pfizer Inc, according to forecasting company EvaluatePharma.

EvaluatePharma's forecast of future sales shows the Swiss drugmaker is surpassing Pfizer in global sales in six years.

Pfizer, who had US$48.4 billion in 2007 revenue, could drop to number six in the world by 2014, the London-based firm said.

Market share

Roche may control six percent of the global prescription drugs market in 2014, the industry group said.

It was ranked fifth in 2007 when it had a 5.2 percent share of the market.

Johnson & Johnson is expected to move from the seventh spot to the fifth in 2014, making the company the largest US manufacturer of pharmaceuticals.

Eli Lilly may fall from tenth to fifteenth, EvaluatePharma said.
