Anglo-Swedish firm AstraZeneca Plc is planning to outsource its entire drug manufacturing activities within ten years, according to reports on Monday.
AstraZeneca is the UK’s second largest pharmaceutical company, second only to Pfizer.
“Manufacturing for AstraZeneca is not a core activity,” said David Smith, AstraZeneca's executive vice-president of operations.
“AstraZeneca is about innovation and brand-building . . . There are lots of people and organisations that can manufacture better than we can.”
Currently, AstraZeneca has 27 manufacturing sites in 19 countries, but Mr. Smith went on to say that “we [AstraZeneca] are looking to access China and India in a much more meaningful way.”
This news followed on from Pfizer’s plans to close its branch in Sandwich, Kent with the loss of over 420 jobs over the next two years.
