Companies are to carry out more clinical research and drug trials in the UK.

Wide-ranging reforms of research in the National Health Service, coupled with an increase in government funding are attracting the companies to do so.

Sally Davies, NHS research and development director told the Financial Times: “What we are rolling out amounts to a massive change and it is beginning to produce results.”

Improved infrastructure

The strategy combines spending to improve infrastructure with administrative changes to make UK hospitals more appealing to industry.

A single research contract would replace the many different contracts companies that has had to negotiate with individual hospital trusts. And a unified ‘adoption committee’ decides within two weeks whether a proposal deserves to be carried out in the NHS.
