Anglo-Swedish pharmaceuticals group AstraZeneca Plc is to seek approval from U.S. Food and Drug Administration to sell extended-release version of its Seroquel treatment for Bipolar disorder.

AstraZeneca said that the submission to the FDA was based on a clinical study showing the once-daily tablet effective in treating depression.

Seroquel XR is currently approved in eight countries - including the United States - to treat schizophrenia in adults. It was launched in the US in 2007.

Global treatment

The original version of the treatment - launched in 1997 - achieved sales of $2.94 billion worldwide in the first nine months of 2007 as a treatment for schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

It is estimated that Seroquel has been prescribed to more than 25 million patients worldwide.
