No wonder Apple’s shares shot up eight percent when Steve Jobs announced the iPhone (right).

The one thing the telecoms market needs is innovation and it was always going to be a race to produce the first effective touch-only mobile. LG and Apple have produced versions, and I know Nokia have been developing their Aeon. The market will decide but the iPhone could be a great boost for the American cellphone industry which has seen Motorola struggle with technology, design and image. For my money, the less there is to go wrong and the larger the available screen area, the better a phone fits its purpose. Should be good for Sat Nav too - unlike some of the stuff you get on your mobile, that's what I call a vital add-on
